Hair loss sufferers are enthusiastic about the latest breakthrough in regenerative medicine for natural and non-surgical hair growth.

First there was PRP for hair loss, and now a second generation of platelet-rich hair growth therapy is available called PRF (platelet-rich fibrin), and it is ideal for natural hair restoration treatments

Both PRP (platelet-rich plasma) and PRF (platelet-rich fibrin) scalp treatments are exceptional options for addressing hair growth concerns and combating hair loss in individuals of all ages and genders. The platelet-rich hair restoration method has demonstrated remarkable efficacy in restoring lost hair. As a minimally invasive hair loss treatment, both PRP and PRF deliver successful results, and are an appealing non-surgical alternative for men and women seeking to rejuvenate their hairline or boost hair density.

To better help you understand the benefits of PRF growth factors and how the science of PRF works, we have gathered together PRF facts that will help you make a more informed decision when deciding between PRF and PRP. As mentioned above, both hair loss treatments have proven successful in restoring hair loss and keeping hair in optimal condition as a hair maintenance treatment.

Este Medical Group clinics offer PRF and PRP hair loss and hair maintenance treatments. Both of these treatments are often had in combination with laser light hair regrowth therapy, and of course, they are ideal treatments to have before and after hair transplant surgery. You can certainly have PRP and PRF standalone treatments and obtain measurable improvements in hair quality and hair loss.

What Is The Difference Between PRF And PRP?

First of all, what is a PRF treatment? PRF, short for platelet-rich fibrin, is a natural healing component found in the blood. It's packed with nourishing platelet blood cells and bioactive proteins; basically PRF is rich in growth factors essential for revitalising hair growth and improving scalp health.

During a PRF treatment, a small quantity of your blood is drawn (i.e., typically from your arm), the blood is put into a centrifugation machine to separate out the platelet-rich fibrin, then the extracted PRF is micro-injected into the areas of hair loss or low hair density on your scalp. The procedure is widely regarded as a simple and painless experience.

PRP vs PRF

The key difference between PRP and PRF is how the blood is processed. PRF hair injections omit adding an anticoagulant, this is often why PRF is called the next generation of platelet-rich hair growth therapy.

PRF hair injections also have significantly higher platelet levels — up to 10 times more — and a sustained release of growth hormones over an extended period, making it a more potent treatment option. In the case of PRF treatment after a hair transplant, PRF injections help trigger a more robust growth cycle for newly transplanted hair follicles.

To recap: with PRP injections an anticoagulant is added; PRF injections don't include this part. The advantage of PRF is it keeps stimulating hair follicles and growth even after the treatment ends. PRP tends to resolve more quickly, whereas PRF injections provide a slow and sustained release of growth factors which can lead to better and longer-lasting outcomes.

Advantage of PRF Hair Injections

As mentioned above, PRF injections don’t include an anticoagulant. Without an anticoagulant the plasma injected into the scalp can better form a platelet and white blood cell fibrin scaffolding that provides better cell adhesion when binding platelets and growth factors, and gradually releases these growth factors over an extended period. This slower and more sustained release of growth factors is the key difference between PRF and PRP’s efficiency.

What Else Is So Special About PRF?

The blood extracted in a PRF treatment is cooled before it is placed in the centrifuge machine, as the temperature of the blood plays a significant role in coagulation. Chilling the blood results in a larger amount of liquid PRF for injection into areas experiencing hair loss or thinning.

At Este Medical we have had tremendous success with both PRP and PRF hair loss and hair maintenance treatments. For example:

PRP is a solid choice when it comes to non-surgical hair restoration, and PRF is proving some advantages over PRP. As new hair restoration methods go, both PRP and PRF deliver remarkable results

What Growth Factors Are In Advanced PRF?

The platelet-rich fibrin hair loss treatment is full of natural growth factors, essentially building blocks of biomaterial, like proteins, that accelerate growth. PRF growth factors are comprised of:

  • Fibroblast Growth Factor: Stimulates cell growth and supports blood circulation. FGF helps with tissue regeneration and wound healing (ideal after hair transplant surgery).
  • Platelet-Derived Growth Factor-BB: Important for cell division, the growth of connective tissues and blood vessels, and tissue repair.
  • Vascular Endothelial Growth Factor: VEGF stimulates the formation of new blood vessels, improving blood supply to the treated area and supporting tissue healing. Boosting blood circulation is a key element in new hair regrowth.
  • Transforming Growth Factor β-1: TGF-β1 regulates cell growth and production. It helps in the formation of new blood vessels and collagen, as well as tissue healing (i.e., boosting scalp health).
  • Insulin-like Growth Factor: IGF aids in cell growth and development, as well as regeneration.

The growth factors found in PRF (platelet-rich fibrin) stimulate cell growth and division in hair follicles, boosting cell regeneration and the enhancement of overall scalp health, which results in new hair growth, stronger hair, and an increase in hair density.

Regrow Your Hair & Revive Your Confidence with Este's PRF Treatment for Hair Loss!

PRF (as well as PRP!) has become one of the most promising hair restoration solutions for individuals experiencing hair thinning or hair loss. It is a non-surgical and minimally invasive procedure that not only stimulates hair growth, but also improves hair density and strength.

Platelet-rich fibrin hair injections can be had on their own to target hair loss concerns, and PRF works extremely well when combined with laser hair regrowth therapy, and PRF growth factors play a significant role in healing after a hair transplant.
