Causes: Maskne

Maskne is quite a new problem and has come about as a result of wearing face masks or face coverings for an extended period of time. Maskne occurs because the face covering creates a warm, moist environment where skin is constantly in contact, and rubbing against, the fabric of the face covering being worn. This constant friction between skin and face covering is the reason why some people experience acne breakouts in this area, or red, blotchy, sore, and irritated skin.

Fortunately, maskne isn’t serious and can usually be cleared up without too much of a problem. If possible, and when you’re in a place where you feel safe to do so, take off your mask or face covering and let your skin breathe. Making sure you regularly wash your face covering is also another must if you are keen to keep your maskne to a minimum. Use skincare products that are non-comedogenic – this means they won’t block your pores. Moisturise, cleanse, and try a retinoid product to help boost skin cell turnover.
