Back acne, or ‘bacne’ in slang terms, is acne that occurs on the back. Just as acne has different forms when it appears elsewhere on the body, so too does back acne. Your back acne may be one or a mix of the following:

  • Whiteheads – small spots with a white ‘head’ in the centre
  • Blackheads – small, black or yellow in colour – blackheads aren’t black because of dirt but because of the hair follicle lining producing its colour
  • Nodules – lumps that are large and firm that develop under the skin’s surface layer. Often painful
  • Cysts – these are the most acute type of spot and can look similar to boils. These lumps are filled with pus and can pose a greater risk of permanent scarring to the skin
  • Papules – bumps that are small, red, and sometimes tender to touch
  • Pustules – close in appearance to papules but with a white core which signifies pus build-up

Causes: Back Acne

There are various reasons as to why you might be experiencing back acne. Finding the root cause can be difficult, but it could be due to one or some of the following:

  1. Your hereditary make-up (you are simply someone who is more likely to develop back acne than someone else due to your genetics)
  2. Certain medication that you’re taking
  3. A hormonal imbalance
  4. Being overly sweaty
  5. Eating too much of a certain type of food – food that contains dairy, has a high glycaemic index, and some carbs have all been linked to an increase in possible back acne

Treatment Options: Back Acne

If you’re looking to treat back acne, there are multiple options you can try to deal with this tricky skin concern. Back acne can be difficult to treat for patients not just because it is often hard to reach this part of the body, but because the root cause behind why it has developed in the first place can often be hard to determine.

Off-the-shelf products such as an azelaic acid spray will ensure active ingredients can be applied to the affected area easily. If you suffer from just the odd breakout on your back, a microdart patch that’s been impregnated with ingredients such as salicylic acid, niacinamide, and vitamin C could help clear the problem area up. Alternatively, if your back acne is on the more severe end of the scale, look to treatments at specialist skin clinics for relief. At Este, we offer the following therapies that can all help tackle back acne. They are -
