How Long Does it Take to Recover After a Hair Transplant?

Hair Transplant Recovery

The hair transplant recovery timeline will vary slightly from person to person, but you can take the following stages as a general rule of what to expect during your healing period.

When you have a hair transplant, you will have hair follicles from a donor site (the back of your head, neck, or somewhere else on your body where hair growth is thicker) transplanted into the recipient site (the site where you need more hair).

How Long is Recovery After Hair Transplant?

Stage One

After around a week to 10 days, you will notice the skin grafts fall off. Then, around three to four weeks later, the hair that was transplanted sheds. This might seem shocking but it is an entirely normal part of the hair transplant stages of recovery.

Stage Two

Once this transplanted hair has fallen out, it’s a bit of a waiting game for your hair follicles to recover from their transplantation, and start producing new, fresh hair growth. This generally happens around three months after the initial shedding.

Stage Three

Once your new hair is growing you can expect it to increase in length at roughly the following rate of growth:

• 0.05cm each day
• 0.5cm per ten days of growth
• 1.5cm a month

With these growth rates in mind, you will appreciate that it will take a fair number of months before you truly appreciate the results of your hair transplant. Our clients generally start to enjoy a noticeable difference to their hair at around eight to 10 months post-transplant.

Stage Four

At one year post hair transplant, you will notice your best results. After this time, your hair will keep growing as normal and can be cut and styled as you choose. Hair transplants are permanent and should last for the rest of your lifetime.

Side Effects of DHI and FUE Hair Transplant Recovery

During your recovery from your hair transplant, it’s common to experience a few side effects. They are usually nothing to worry about and are all just part of the healing process. The most common side effects you may experience include -

1. A tight, swollen scalp
2. An ache on your scalp
3. Scalp tenderness
4. Temporary scabbing of the skin
5. Inflammation of hair follicles
6. Bleeding and/or bruising at the site of transplant
7. Temporary redness of the skin – you will need to stay out of the sun and use UV protection
