Mycosis fungoides is a type of blood cancer that’s called cutaneous T-cell lymphoma. These cutaneous T-cell lymphomas happen once specific white blood cells that are called T-cells, turn cancerous. It is usually the skin that’s affected by these cancers, and different forms of skin lesions occur.
It is not entirely known what causes mycosis fungoides. It is thought it can occur because of antigen persistence, over-exposure to carcinogenic substances, and retroviruses. Mycosis fungoides is rare with around only 450 people in the UK, each year, being diagnosed with the condition. It is most common to be diagnosed with this skin condition between the ages of 50 and 70, and most people with the condition enjoy a normal life expectancy.
Mycosis fungoides is a life-long condition and cannot be cured. However, the symptoms of the condition can be cleared for some time. Your skin specialist may prescribe steroid treatment, and/or light or phototherapy. At Este we are one of the first clinics in the UK to offer Exciplex Light Therapy for mycosis fungoides. This Monochromatic UVB Light Technology can treat autoimmune skin conditions using an effective 308nm wavelength into the epidermis without pain.
When we use the Visia Digital Skin Analysis to assess your skin, we are using a tool that allows us to see deep below the surface layer of your skin and detect a multiple of potential concerns. This advanced technology allows us to pick up on issues such as spots, wrinkles, texture, pores, UV spots, scars, red areas, porphyrins and more.

What does mycosis fungoides look like?
Mycosis fungoides can often be mistaken for other common skin conditions such as eczema or psoriasis. It can take a long time to develop and starts off as dry patches in irregular shapes. As time goes on, these patches may get thicker, skin can become red all over, and finally lumps of mycosis fungoides may develop.
Would it help if I changed my diet?
Mycosis fungoides is not affected by diet so there is no need to change the food you’re eating.
