Thanks to their instant results, lip fillers are hugely popular. But what exactly are they, how do they work, and what sort of results can you expect? Let’s take a look...

What are Lip Fillers?

Lip fillers are an injectable. They can instantly boost volume and definition to the lips, as well as help to smooth out lines and wrinkles around the mouth. At Este, we use lip fillers that are made from Hyaluronic Acid – a natural ingredient that our bodies naturally produce – albeit at much smaller quantities.

Dermal fillers can be used to create natural, subtle lift to the lips and mouth area, or be used to give a more dramatic result. Lip fillers are tailored to you so you get to decide how much or how little you want to have. If you’re not sure, then our highly trained staff will be able to advise.

How long do Lip Fillers Last?

Along with ‘is lip filler permanent?’, this is one of the most frequently asked questions we hear, and unfortunately the longevity of lip fillers varies from person to person.

Typically, you can expect your lip fillers to last up to 18 months, and so they are definitely not permanent. However, this all depends on how much lip filler you’ve had injected, the location of the lip filler, and also how quickly your body works to absorb it.

Do Lip Fillers Hurt?

No one likes to feel pain, and we appreciate you may feel a little anxious about having lip fillers if you’ve never tried them before. Rest assured, at Este, we work hard to make sure you’re as comfortable as possible during your treatment. For most clients, any discomfort felt is minimal. You may -

  • Feel a pinching sensation
  • Experience brief pain
  • Find that it is more uncomfortable, the more filler you have injected

If you are highly sensitive to injections and are overly worried about feeling pain, then we can use a topical numbing agent to ensure any discomfort is kept as low as possible during your lip filler procedure.

How long does it take for Lip Fillers to Settle?

Lip filler healing process is relatively fast. You may experience mild swelling, reddening and/or bruising after lip fillers for a few days post treatment, but everything should settle down within a couple of days. In terms of your fillers completely settling down, this may take up to four weeks to happen. After this point, you should find that you’ve achieved your desired lip filler result, which can then be enjoyed for months to follow.

We are often asked, ‘is it normal to have lumps after lip fillers’ and the answer to this is, yes it can be. Lumps after lip filler treatment are considered a normal side effect, and should subside – along with any bruising or redness - within a few days. If you have lumps that are hanging around and not diminishing in size, they may need addressing. If you are at all concerned, it’s always wise to get in touch with your practitioner and ask for advice.

What if my Lip Fillers go Wrong?

When you use a highly reputable clinic like Este it’s incredibly rare for things to go wrong. If you’ve had a lip filler procedure and you’re unhappy with the look, it is possible to get things rectified.

Fortunately, there is a product called hyaluronidase that dissolves hyaluronic acid. It can only be issued on prescription though so it’s vital that prior to your treatment you make sure the clinic you’re attending for your treatment is of a high calibre and the staff have all received adequate training.

How about After Care for Lip Fillers?

If you want to get the most out of your lips fillers and ensure they last as long as possible, settle nicely, and look good, you can consider trying the following -

  • Help to ease swelling and bruising with an ice pack (wrapped in cloth)
  • Apply aloe vera or arnica cream to tackle any bruising
  • Don’t wear lipsticks or lip pencils or any make-up on or around the lips for 24 hours post procedure
  • Avoid exercise for 48 hours after your treatment – this is to ensure any bruising or swelling is kept to a minimum
  • Drink plenty of water to stay hydrated and help your body mend
  • Use a few extra pillows when you sleep – this will help keep your head up and promote any swelling to go down
